V1240 Guy Laroche Vogue Paris Original: The invisible Side Zipper - O fecho lateral invisível

EN Summary: The original dress has an invisible zipper on the side, but as I mentioned in my previous post, I find it hardly necessary. Even so I wanted to sew in the zipper so I picked a smaller one (9"). The challenge is using a textured fabric (the plumeti dots could get stuck into the zipper cursor) and also sew the zipper to two layers of fabric at once. Keep on reading if you wish to know a bit more of this process.

EN: To shorten the zipper opening on the pattern you should subtract 3/8" (1cm) to the zipper length, measure it from the top side edge (cutting line) and mark a new zipper notch on the pattern side (check the side on the pattern where the original notch is marked; note that the overlay pieces are notched for the zipper as well, so you should mark the new zipper length on them also). Subtracting 3/8" will leave a zipper tail of 1"3/16 (3cm) below the notch and a also some room at the top of the zipper to account for the armhole seam allowance and the hook&eye (13/16" or 2cm).
---

EN: Remember that it is necessary to stabilize the zipper insertion area; pattern instructions often miss this step, but it does make a lot of difference. In this case there's no need to do this on all the layers and I interfaced the inner layer alone. As I've already mentioned, I used two rectangles of silk organza, approximately 1" wide and extending the notch by another 1". I pinked one of the longer edges (the ones facing the dress) and basted them in place along the sides of the inner dress. Then I overedged the SAs from top to bottom with my serger. Note that the inner dress side facing the zipper is left unstitched until after the zipper has been sewn in.
---
EN: The inner dress side below the zipper is left unstitched but the outer layer side is not; before stitching in the zipper, the outer layer must be completed, side seams included: the zipper side seam of the outer layer should stitched below the zipper notch and clipped to the zipper notch. Then it is hand-basted to the inner layer of the dress along the neckline, armholes and side zipper edges. The next photo shows this stage, while the neckline is pinned to the dressform:

EN: From here on the zipper is stitched normally. I took some care not to stitch too close to the zipper teeth this time (I usually move the needle from its centered position to stitch more close to the zipper teeth but this time I didn't) - I did this to prevent the plumeti dots from being caught and cause the zipper to stuck. I hand basted the zipper tape to one side first, stitched from the top down and back-stitched at the notch; then I closed the zipper, pinned it in place on the opposite side, opened the zipper again, hand-basted in place and stitched from the top down again, back stitching at the end/notch. The zipper cursor is placed below the notch and should be pulled up carefully through the little seam space along the notch. Afterwords pull the cursor all the way up, check to see if everything is lined up and as a final step, stitch the inner dress layer side seam from hem to the zipper opening as shown in the third drawing below. Press seam flat and open and lightly steam the closed zipper from the right side.
---

EN: the following steps are constructing and attaching the lining to the dress! Stay tuned!
