EN Summary: In this episode of the Serger Files I am addressing the 5-thread Safety Stitch  on my Singer 14T957DC (it's been said that this is one of the most challenging stitches); I believe the principles described apply to most of the 5-thread sergers/overlockers for domestic use so even if you don't own this specific model it's probable that you'll still find some useful information. Continuem a ler o artigo completo!

EN: The 5-thread Safety stitch is a stitch formation suitable for woven fabrics (from lightweight to heavyweight) and provides a strong and durable seam finishing without the need of reinforcing the seam with a conventional sewing machine. To adapt this stitch to the specific fabric weight, just use the foot pressure adjusting dial (increasing foot pressure for lightweight fabrics and decreasing for heavyweight). This stitch is a combination of a two-thread chain-stitch with a three-thread overlock stitch so my first tip for setting up this stitch is:

Instead of following the threading order suggested in the manual (upper-looper, lower-looper, chainstitch looper, right overedge needle, coverstitch needle), I suggest threading and adjusting for a perfectly balanced 3-thread overlock stitch first (chain off, test the stitch on a scrap of fabric) and then thread the chainstitch looper and chainstitch/coverstitch needle next; all you have to do is to proof the chainstitch and adjust tensions on the coverstitch needle and looper, if necessary.

EN: The previous diagram shows a summary of the serger set-up, including the suggested tensions; these tensions are just suggestions and are a good starting point, but they are not written in stone (specially with the manual tension adjustment serger models. As you can see, I had to loosen the tension of the coverstitch needle (orange) and increase tensions on the upper and lower loopers (green and red). For this stitch the spreader is disengaged and the upper looper clutch is also disengaged (upper looper is fully operational this way). The upper knife is engaged, the stitch finger is on N and the overedge guide plate is set up. Every dial is on N, except the stitch length (I prefer a slightly longer stitch with the chainstitch). Note: the left coverstitch needle can be used instead of the middle needle for a wider stitch.

EN: On this serger, the chainstitch needle thread has its own take-up lever, right above the usual take-up lever; above the needles, the chainstitch needle thread goes on front of the thread guide bar. After threading the needle, pull the thread to the back from under the presser foot.
---
EN: Below you can see the thread path for the chainstitch looper. Every guide must be used and threaded the correct way, as shown in the user manual:
---
EN: The big challenge is threading the chainstitch looper; this machine has a special lever which carries the thread and threads it through the back of the looper (there's a similar mechanism for threading the lower looper). So after the last thread guide is threaded (it's right below the upper knife, almost hidden to the left), first I pass the thread through the looper's eye from front to back, and pass it below the other loopers with the help of tweezers (some literature mention passing it above the lower looper; I tried it both ways and saw no difference); bring the thread to the back of the presser foot. Hold the thread tight while placing it over the "V"-shaped groove as seen on the photo below; then pull the threading lever all the way up and the back of the looper will be threaded correctly.
---
EN: This is how it should look (the feet is still up and should remain that way while threading the serger):
---
EN: Below I'm checking where to place the seam allowance whenever I have a 5/8" seam allowance; the edge of the fabric (before being cut by the knives) should be aligned with the edge of the stitch finger lever so the chainstitch is at 5/8" from the edge:
---
EN: With these sergers the chainstitch doesn't form if there's no fabric under the needle, so it's best to start stitching with the coverstitch needle hitting the fabric. If the seam allowance is 5/8", a little allowance must be shaved off at the beginning of the seam, aligning the edge of the fabric with the cutting width of the blades. This is not absolutely necessary but this way the stitch will look nicer at the beginning of the seam. I also find that it's best to start stitching slow, until I'm sure everything is perfectly ok.
---
EN: This is it, hope you guys find this useful. Below there's an example of the stitch; I've tested it on a sample of the fabric I'm using for my current project (which is finished by know, btw!). Thank you all for reading!
